Bhagavad Gita in Pictures

About Bhagavad Gita
The Bhagavad Gita (Sanskrit भगवद्गीता, Bhagavad Gītā, “Song of God”) is a Sanskrit text from the chapter Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata epic, comprising 700 verses.

Krishna, as the speaker of the Bhagavad Gita, is referred to within as Bhagavan (the divine one). The verses themselves, using the range and style of Sanskrit meter (chhandas) with similes and metaphors, are written in a poetic form that is traditionally chanted; hence the title, which translates to “the Song of the Divine One”. The Bhagavad Gita is revered as sacred by Hindu traditions, and especially so by Vaishnavas (followers of Vishnu). It is commonly referred to as The Gita.

The content of the text is a conversation between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield of Kurukshetra just prior to the start of the Kurukshetra war. Responding to Arjuna’s confusion and moral dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and Prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies. This has led to the Gita often being described as a concise guide to Hindu philosophy and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life. During the discourse, Krishna reveals his identity as the Supreme Being Himself (Svayam bhagavan), blessing Arjuna with an awe-inspiring glimpse of His divine universal form.

The Bhagavad Gita is also called Gitopanishad as well as Yogopanishad, implying its status as an Upanishad, or a Vedantic scripture. Since the Gita is drawn from the Mahabharata, it is a Smriti text. However, referring to it as an Upanishad is intended to give it status comparable to that of śruti, or revealed knowledge.

Could you please put the pictures in the cronological order of events ? Now it starts with Sri Krishna’s later years and goes back to his childhood. Please put some captions also to each picture so that those who read can relate the picture with the story…Thanks a lot for this beautiful collection. I see that some of the pictures got changed / removed from the collection I saw four days back. More appropraite title should be “Srimad Bhagavatham in pictures”

Where are these pictures from? How come there is no credit given?

Also, as others pointed out, these are not Bhagvat gita pictures, and they are not Mahabharata pictures either; they look more like life of Krishna pictures.

Most of these don’t even refer to Bhagavad Gita. Krishna’s life doesn’t appear there. All you get is a dialog between Arjuna and Krishna, just prior to the battle at Kurukshetra.

Just saying…

Great work. If we put some more effort and add a brief text about the context in the picture, we can very well cover Lord Krishna’s story completely. Thanks once again for the great work.

Great pictures. BTW these scenes are not from Bhagavad Gita alone as it depicts scenes from Krishna’s childhood with Balram. The website should say, Mahabharata in Pictures and not Bhagavad Gita in Pictures.

Hi Friends,

Nice to see all these pictures. The artwork is nice.

But For everyone’s information I have read in a book written by Mahatma Gandhiji named “In search of Supreme”, in page number 29 that they are two different Krishnas. Krishna who is depicted in Bhagavad Gita and Krishna who danced on serpent, who had Radha and Rukmani as wives were different. The Krishna in the Bhagavad gita is nothing but the Supreme true God who was found in Rig veda, the oldest Veda of Hinduism.

Its just a sharing of Information

All great paintings. Lovely pictures. Krishna who told Gita to Arjuna and the King Krishna are different. Both resided in the body of King Krishna. All supreme Krishna who is the creator of this Universe was in King Krishna when he told the Gita to Arjuna. The supreme cosmic force was in king Krishna in several other occations too. Every one of us have the Supreme Krishna in us. We have to find out him in us. We are very tinny part of Krishna.

Great Pictures, seem to come from the ISKON or similar proganization that puts these framed pictures for sale. Some technical details are inaccurate. Example, the chariot with 5 horses? Its supposed to be 4
