A latest study of Anita Raj professor of Boston University School of Public health made on 13,500 women who had been married between the ages of 15-24, found that the children born to them are at higher risk for malnourishment compared to those born to older mothers who married after 18 years age.
The study revealed that 67% of babies born to child brides were malnourished, 22% likelier to be stunted and 24% to be under weight compared to the control group of children born to brides aged above 18 years.
The study further concluded that India has the highest number of child deaths below the age of 5 years in the world. More than 44% of 20-24 years in India marry before they reach 18 years and bear children. These studies stress the need for delayed child bearing among teenage wives.
