Uncontrolled Hypertension In Women Leads To Dementia

‘Dementia’ is a condition wherein the mental abilities to perform are reduced leading to a group of symptoms due to gradual loss of brain cells (Neurons) of the cerebral cortex. The symptoms include memory loss, reduced attention, poor judgment, failure to perform normal tasks and may forget the names of the very familiar persons. The causes of dementia are due to old age and also several specific diseases.

A recent study made by women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (MHIMS) University of Pittsburgh graduate school of public health on 1403 women aged 65 years and more showed that women having high blood pressure of over 140/90 showed more white matter damage than the control group with normal blood pressure.

Therefore they stressed that controlling of hypertension is very important to prevent brain cell damage leading to dementia. However they stated that further trials are needed to confirm the results.
