@Dave and SoulPatrol,

You both seem very quick to judge. As someone who works and has spent a long time in the hobby, I run into many like yourself who jump to conclusions too quickly.

Consider the following before commenting:

-What if the people above are ichthyologists (which is very likely in many of those pictures)? Then would it be ok? If not then are we not allowed to study any animal life by your guidelines?

-Have you considered many if not all of those fish are a food source for someone unless being studied for science?

-Native people to the tropical areas above (many of which is in the Amazon Basin) RELY on fish farming and catching as a means of surviving. But screw them, leave the fish in the water right?

-How do you know they arent planning on releasing them? Relating to this, how do you know they are not just on a fishing expedition studying and learning about fish, then releasing them? Fish can live hours (some days-weeks out of water).

Do you now see the problem with speaking before thinking?

Your logic is confusing…”They should be left in the water.”

Well then we should say that for every single animal, regardless of the purpose behind it yes?

To the author, quite a nice collection of mostly stolen pictures, the Mekong Cat is always one of my favs.

Oh and BTW, a whale IS NOT a fish.

@Chris,

I am very chilled “dood.” I run into people who make sweeping statements like that and I present my point.

“the microwave is not an oven”

*sigh* Why bother? Let me explain it this way, a whale is a mammal. A shark is a fish. Your analogy does not apply.

Nice, Ive seen about half these shots floating around the net. Drew I hear ya, sounds like those first comments came from PETA. I work for the department of conservation and we kill millions of fish every summer for research ONLY and they will not allow us to eat any fish killed during surveys. Hey chris “dood” your comment makes no sense (dood lol)

Drew,
You make excellent, logical, matter-of-fact comments. Thanks for trying to raise a scintilla of synaptic activity. Don’t worry about what some of the critics think, they don’t actually.

to the people bitching about how drew needs a life: personally i think it’s cool that he’s trying to educate a few morons (sorry to say it’s a lost cause).
if you say he needs a life, well, i’m guessing he does have one, probably one more interesting that yours. so sad that the only way you can get off is by bashing people over the internet. (and this isn’t bashing, this is truth-telling =D ).
but on topic, these are really interesting photos. and people wonder why i don’t like swimming in the ocean.

The pictures are pretty cool, by all accounts from what I heard some of the big catfish get caught due to the fact that they have eaten native children etc don’t know if it’s true, but there have been stories.

Fish are also a very large part of the people’s diet and a catfish/fish that size would feed them for a few days for sure.

Can see everybody’s point-and obviously everybody needs to respect each others views.

p.s dolphin’s and whales are mamals and not fish.

also are the catfish from rivers, and not the ocean?

I am going to school to become a marine biologist and I STILL think that these guys are best left in the water. But then again I never go “fishing”… I tried throwing a hook baited with twenty dollar bills into the grocery section of walmart, does that count?

oh my god see that bloody smear coming out of the big ones anus? It must have been awesome sustaining enough internal damage to bleed like that!!!!11!!1!!!!one!!!!

Teddy said,

May 19, 2008 @ 12:42 am

You’re going to school to be a marine biologist and have never gone fishing? That seems a more than a little ignorant and close minded. Fishing is probably the biggest impact humans have on marine biology. It seems logical you would get some first hand experience with it if for nothing more than education.

Also, you are probably a nice person and the thought of an animal feeling pain bothers you but, you really need to toughen up if the thought of an animal sustaining internal damage bothers you. Almost every living creature on earth would die without it.

My husband is a semi prefessional angler in the UK & a baliff for Cemex (large group of water in the UK). British fisherman work on a ‘catch & release’ system. Where all fish get photographed & the put back safely. Some are even offered first aid if needed.
This is a great way to keep a visual track of some of the UKs most famous fish!

Sam said,

May 22, 2008 @ 12:36 pm

anglers are the eyes and ears of the aquatic world. all anglers i know and myself included are first and foremost conservationists. we do a lot of work behind the scenes, for example investigating newly imported aquatic viruses and lobbying our parliament to increase restrictions on illegal fish movements around europe, which threaten our native fish stocks.

i have caught and released thousands of fish and have never caused them any harm, in fact quite the contrary, as fish i have caught in the past at 10lb over 20 years ago are now well over 40lb and healthier than ever. this is thanks to the care and respect shown to them by anglers. some of the fish i angle for are more famous than the anglers that catch them!

sure a few of those pictured above may not have gone back, but most that i saw appeared healthy and indeed many were taken as ‘returner’ shots. i have fished across europe for a variety of species and have met many lifelong friends along the way. we call it the brotherhood of the angle. i love my fishing and have made it my life, which is a happy and fulfilled one. great pictures, keep up the good work and fish safe kids!

Wow those are some giant fish! I never seen fish that big out of the water! How did you catch them? Those fish should of been kept in the water like 500 feet deep so no would be able to harm them. So weird on what the ocean and lakes hold below.
