Dogs of around 25 breeds, some rare ones, took part at the pet show organised by Kennel Association of Visakha at Tenneti Park on Sunday. The event received an overwhelming response of more than 200 entries from various parts of the region. Other pets like Persian cats, British love birds, rare fancy chicken like silver saprite and silky chicken also took part.
Among the various breeds of dog, one of the rarest ones was the Chihuahua.
It is the smallest breed of dog and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Pugs, spitz, English bull dog, Pekingese, Siberian husky and Labrador were the other varieties of dogs that had a field day at the pet show.
The only two Indian breeds that took part in the show were Kolleti Jagilam and Rajapalayam. The adorable wrinkle-faced pug was still the most popular small breed while the ferocious and huge appearance of the Great Dane invited a lot of curious glances.
The dogs were judged on the basis of breed standards and given marks for maintenance, overall physical appearance, proportionate body, general health and other factors.
“The idea behind conducting the event is to encourage people to maintain healthy pets and create awareness about different types of pets,” said M.J.C. Rajesh, secretary of Kennel Association of Visakha.
The association has been holding the event for the past four years. [The Hindu]
