Nokia is now planning to provide mobile phones ranging from Rs.500( approx. $10) to Rs. 1,000( approx $20) in India, especially for rural India as, more than 500 million people have no mobile phones despite the country being second largest mobile market among the world.
To get an idea of let us see one of the Nokia’s low cost phone ‘Nokia 1280’ which although is a low-end phone it is provided with some good features like 96 x 68 monochrome display, FM radio, MP3 ring tones, 3.5mm headset jack and a flash light. For $10 phones some of the features are doubtful. GeePee is another company that is trying to launch low cost mobiles in India.
